The very real Wonder Woman (the fabulous Lynda Carter) has a few things to say about La Palin:
Don’t get me started. She’s the anti-Wonder Woman. She’s judgmental and dictatorial, telling people how they’ve got to live their lives. And a superior religious self-righteousness … that’s just not what Wonder Woman is about. Hillary Clinton is a lot more like Wonder Woman than Mrs. Palin. She did it all, didn’t she?
No one has the right to dictate, particularly in this country, to force your own personal views upon the populace — religious views. I think that is suppressive, oppressive, and anti-American. We are the loyal opposition. That’s the whole point of this country: freedom of speech, personal rights, personal freedom. Nor would Wonder Woman be the person to tell people how to live their lives. Worry about your own life! Worry about your own family! Don’t be telling me what I want to do with mine.
I like John McCain. But this woman — it’s anathema to me what she stands for. I think America should be very afraid. Very afraid. Separation of church and state is the one thing the creators of the Constitution did agree on — that it wasn’t to be a religious government. People should feel free to speak their minds about religion but not dictate it or put it into law.
What I don’t understand, honestly, is how anyone can even begin to say they know the mind of God. Who do they think they are? I think that’s ridiculous. I know what God is in my life. Now I am sure that she’s not all just that. But it’s enough to me. It’s enough for me to have a visceral reaction. And it makes me mad.
People need to speak up. Doesn’t mean that I’m godless. Doesn’t mean that I am a murderer. What I hate is this demonization of everybody but one position. You’re un-American because you’re against the war. It’s such bullshit. Fear. It’s really such a finite way of thinking about God to think that your measley little mind can know the mind of God. It’s a very little God that way. I think that God’s bigger. I don’t presume to know his mind. Or her mind.
God, I'm even more in love with Lynda Carter now than I ever thought possible...
Finally got to see Iron Man and have to say I enjoyed every minute. It was a Marvel fanboy's (raises hand) dream come true.
Robert Downey Jr is the perfect Tony Stark, while Jeff Bridges is suitably creepy (and manical) as his nemesis. I thought the reworking of this origin story worked very well, updating the context to Afghanistan.
The special effects were great, in that they weren't distracting. All in all, it set itself up perfectly for a sequel (please make it happen) featuring - perhaps - the Mandarin?
The story was accessible for newbies (I watched it with two of the same) but contained just enough in-references for older hands ("Ten Rings", the War Machine armour, and others).
If you haven't seen it, you *must* sit through the end credits. Trust me - if you know Marvel comics, it will be worth your wait.
Ooooh.
(Should a grown man be this excited about a comic?)
I jut saw this photo while trawling the internets (doing anything to avoid starting Christmas present wrapping... I hate it) and thought I'd share.
Even if you're not a fan of Iron Man (and seriously, who isn't?) you have to admire this statue made from lego.
You can see more of the same guy's creativity on his site here. Nice.
Comic Book Resources has a preview of New Avengers issue 31. In a nutshell, lots of ninjas and stabbing action. As I've yet to get my hands on issue 30, I hope these panels will make more sense soon.
Anyone else sick of the sheer number of ninjas in this comic? It's getting boring Bendis, move on.
I went to see Spider-Man 3 last night - and I wasn't disappointed. I didn't have very high expectations though, so that's probably why. Don't get me wrong, I loved the first couple of films, but it's been my experience that the final parts of trilogies can be a bit of a let-down. X-Men 3, that last bit of the Lord of the Rings, Return of the Jedi. I could go on.
Anyway, I went in with lowish expectations and an unfortunate number of middling reviews echoing in my delicate ears.
Happily, the film was very entertaining: great special effects, action sequences and some nice in-jokes and comedy moments. The down side? Well, it was just a tad too long and sadly, everyone I know can identify exactly which scenes could have been cut to reign this back to two hours or so. Also, too many villains, not enough detail on each.
Overall, a very entertaining popcorn film, as long as you're not expecting art - just make sure you get a comfortable seat!
Which brings me to a related point - the cinema in question. I went to the cinema at West India Quay near Canary Wharf. It's usually alright and a godsend if you want to avoid schlepping into the West End. However, this being a popular film, the cinema was packed. Not necessarily a problem, but the usual loud-mouthed 'yoofs' were in - the type that play with their mobile phones during the film, throw popcorn and generally piss off all the normal 'adults' in the place. It was like a gathering of Catherine Tate characters. Bovered? Yes, I was. Chav scum.
